چکیده

This paper studies the connection admission control for PCS-to-Internet protocol internetworking. In order to provide QoS to the Internet and avoid scalability problems, several recent papers proposed endpoint measurement-based admission control (EMAC) schemes, in which admission decisions are based measurement results from probe packets exchanged between end hosts. Although EMAC has many desirable features in the wireline networks as shown in previous work, we show in this paper that several distinct characteristics in mobile wireless networks, such as low bandwidth, user mobility and high bit error rate, make EMAC difficult to implement. Observing that networks offering 3rd generation (3G) personal communication service (PCS), such as UMTS, already incorporate their own connection admission control functions, we propose a mobile-EMAC (M-EMAC) scheme for PCS-to-IP internetworking. Simulation results show that M-EMAC outperforms EMAC in the wireless domain by improving channel utilization while reducing packet losses.

Four Logics and a Protocol

The Internet Protocol (IP) is the protocol used to provide connectionless communication between hosts connected to the Internet. It provides a basic internetworking service to transport protocols such as Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP). These in turn provide both connection-oriented and connectionless services to applications such as file transfer (FTP) and ...

A Three-Pass Establishment Protocol for Real-Time Multiparty Communication

The development of high-speed networks and global internetworking protocols enable new, multimedia-oriented, applications to emerge, such as teleconferencing and other collaborative applications, or video-on-demand. These new applications rely on the underlying communication infrastructure to be able to provide Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees, typically in form of delay and jitter bounds. A...

Experimental Results From Internetworking Data Applications Over Various Wireless Networks Using a Single Flexible Error Control Protocol

This paper describes results from several wireless field trials. During these trials, data applications communicated over various combinations of wireless networks including satellite, low power PCS, high power cellular, and packet data. Looking at loss of packets and higher layer blocks, our initial results indicate that channel conditions vary dramatically, even within a single network. We hi...

The Tenet Real-Time Protocol Suite: Design, Implementation, and Experiences1

Many future applications will require guarantees on network performance, such as bounds on throughput, delay, delay jitter, and reliability. To address this need, the Tenet Group at the University of California at Berkeley has designed, simulated, and implemented a suite of network protocols to support real-time channels (network connections with mathematically provable performance guarantees)....
